Design workshop at the Amman Design Institute

By invitation from the Design Institute Amman in Jordan, Tarek Atrissi conducted a design workshop in Amman, Jordan from 11 to 14 June 2014. The workshop “Arabic Typography in the context of Branding”, took place at “Wild Jordan” facilities in Amman with the participation of a group of talented professionals and design students visiting or living in Jordan.

This 3 days workshop focused on Arabic Typography in the context of Branding, starting with an exercise on Arabic Lettering. Between the art of classic Arabic calligraphy and the contemporary digital Arabic type design, lies the discipline of Arabic lettering, a task often in the hand of graphic designers in the context of branding, logo design and masthead design. Day 1 of the workshop will focused on the Arabic word and explored in theory and practice the creative possibilities of Arabic lettering. The workshop developed in day 2 and 3 the typographic basics of lettering design into their wider possibilities within branding, and explored the typographic bilingual possibilities within visual and corporate identity design, urban design, as well as Arabic type design.

The workshop was a chance as well to document the typographic urban landscape of Amman city and study and incorporate the found typography on the streets into the projects developed in the workshop.
